According to Netflix, The Old Guard is easily among the top 10 most popular films to ever hit the popular streaming service. Netflix estimates that the action pic will be seen by over 72 million households within four weeks.
To add on to the record-breaking report, Gina Prince-Bythewood, who helmed the thriller, will become the first Black female director on that list. The Old Guard also marks Prince-Bythewood’s fourth film, her directorial credentials extending to projects Love & Basketball and The Secret Life of Bees.
The Old Guard debuted on Netflix on July 10. It already has been featured in the top 10 trending movies on the streaming platform.
The movie is based on the graphic novels of Greg Rucka, who also wrote the screenplay. The story follows a covert team of immortal mercenaries who are suddenly exposed and must fight to keep their identity a secret just as an unexpected new member is discovered. Charlize Theron stars in the movie, along with Kiki Layne and Matthias Schoenaerts. Theron also produced the movie.
Netflix recently dropped its earnings report for the quarter. Chris Hemsworth’s action movie Extraction topped any Netflix feature to date with 99 million households tuning in within the first few minutes in the first four weeks of debuting. Other movies include Mindy Kaling’s Never Have I Ever at 40M, Spike Lee movie Da 5 Bloods at 27M, The Wrong Missy with David Spade and Lauren Lapkus at 59M, and Steve Carrell’s Space Force series at 40M.
