Most known for his role in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Charlie Day is used to ruffling feathers with his comedy. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie voice actor certainly did so at Nintendo this week after a press interview promoting the animated blockbuster, where he referenced murder suspect, Luigi Mangione.
Day voices the aptly named Luigi in the film. During the interview, he was asked to name his favorite Luigi in “recent American history”. The question was clearly phrased to elicit a mention of Mangione, which Day and castmates, Anya Taylor-Joy (Princess Peach) and Keegan Michael Key (Toad), caught on to. Key yelps with laughter, and Joy does a facepalm as Day answers,
In recent American history?! Ah, well, me first of all, number one. Luigi Mangione, number 2.
Amongst the laughter from Day’s castmates, another interviewer admits that Mangione was the answer they “had wanted”. Mangione is the suspect currently on trial for the murder of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, with his alleged actions dubbed “Robin Hood-like” and his good looks have garnered him quite a fan base.
Critics haven’t been too fond of the Super Mario sequel. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie currently has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 43%, but it seems to be appealing to audiences as the audience score is at 91%. Super Mario and Nintendo fans flocked to theaters Wednesday night, raising $68.4M at the worldwide box office – more than the first day worldwide box office for the first film.
Also returning to the franchise are Chris Pratt as Mario and Jack Black as Bowser. The sequel boasts some A-list newcomers that include Donald Glover as Yoshi, Brie Larson as Rosalina, and Glen Powell as fan favorite Nintendo character, Fox McCloud.
