The limited opening of mega pop star Charli xcx’s The Moment grossed nearly $428,000 this weekend. The film earned the third-largest limited debut of the post-COVID era, following Marty Supreme and Asteroid City. The original idea from Charli stars celebrities from across the industry, including Alexander Skarsgård, Rachel Sennott, Kylie Jenner, Julia Fox and Rosanna Arquette. The film blurs the line between reality and fiction inviting audiences to question the true experience of the Brat singer.
Directed by Aidan Zamiri, the film recently premiered at Sundance, where two other Charli xcx projects debuted as well. Speaking from the stage, she said:
Right now, unlike the me in the film, I am sort of like really wanting ‘brat’ to stop and actually pivot, like as far away as possible… And that’s not because I don’t love it. It’s just because I think for all of us as artists, you want to challenge yourself and … totally switch the creative soup that you’re in and go and live in a different bowl for a while and feel enriched by that.
Charli co-wrote the film with Zamiri and Bertie Brandes. The film opened in New York and Los Angeles on January 30 and expands wide on February 6.
