Channing Tatum’s Free Association Acquires Rights to ‘The Maxx’

The Maxx has officially found a home at Channing Tatum’s production banner Free Association. Tatum and Roy Lee’s Vertigo Entertainment have acquired the rights to the reality-bending superhero series and plan to create a live-action film with the property, according to Deadline.

The titular character, known as The Maxx, is a well-disguised superhero who’s sworn duty is to protect the Jungle Queen in a vicinity that closely resembles the Australian outback. The Maxx also exists in the modern world as a bum. His masked nature and murmurs of questing are mistaken by pedestrians for having a mental illness.

Written and illustrated by Sam Kieth and initially issued in 1993 by Image Comics, The Maxx became an award-winning animated series which aired on MTV’s Oddities in 1995 and earned a Annie Award during the course of its run.

Coordination and direction for the project will be determined by Free Association. The banner announced they are split as to whether the property will be adapted as a feature film or a television series. Tatum, however, will serve as The Maxx’s producer regardless of the outcome alongside fellow staff members Peter Kiernan, Reid Carolin, and Tal Vigderson. Michael Parets will be supervising the project for Free Association.
