After the success of Sausage Party last year, it seems others are now considering the possibility of R-rated animated features. Netflix announced they will be making R-rated America: The Motion Picture, which will tell an alternative history of the founding of the United States, and Channing Tatum will be voicing the lead character, President George Washington.
Dave Callaham has penned the script, and Matt Thompson has been hired as director. Callaham is known for writing The Expendables and 2014’s Godzilla, Thompson is most well-known for executive producing/writing the FX series Archer. Adam Reed, who is also an executive producer on Archer, will also be producing.
Phil Lord and Chris Miller (The Lego Movie, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, 21 Jumpstreet) will be serve as producers. Tatum will also be a producer under his production company Free Association, along with Peter Keirnan and Reid Carolin.
Tatum is probably most well-known for starring in stripper comedy/drama franchise Magic Mike, but has also starred in critically-acclaimed Foxcatcher, as well as Quentin Tarrantino’s The Hateful Eight. This won’t be his first time voicing a character for an animated film, after already voicing Superman in The Lego Movie and The Lego Batman Movie. Look for Tatum next in Logan Lucky with Adam Driver, Daniel Craig, and Seth MacFarlane, as well as Kingsman: Golden Circle with Jeff Bridges, Colin Firth, Halle Berry, and Julianne Moore.
Stay tuned for more details about America: The Motion Picture.
