‘Cats’ Getting Updated Special Effects while in Theaters

Ever since Cats’ first trailer was released, many were talking about the film’s horrifying uncanny valley aesthetics. The film has already been talked about infamously, especially with its poor box office opening, but one unexpected thing is that apparently Universal is still working on the film. Universal recently announced that they will be releasing an updated version of the film to fix any CGI issues that have been criticized in the adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic musical. The film’s runtime, however will remain the same, with just the effects being updated.

The idea admittedly sounds reasonable, considering how well it worked for the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie. Much like Cats and the 2019 Aladdin remake, that film was also met with various criticisms of the CGI design for one of its main characters. Unlike Aladdin and Cats however, Paramount was more aware of the backlash Sonic received and delayed the film so the CGI effects artists could help fix their huge initial mistake. Cats is doing the same thing now, but it feels too little too late. The film has already been out for a couple of days and the special effects team don’t nearly have as much time as what Paramount gave their Sonic team.

The attempt is admirable, but considering how Cats has been track poorly behind Frozen 2, Jumanji: The Next Level and especially Star Wars Rise of Skywalker, it’s unknown if these special effects changes will boost Cats‘ box office performance. The film has been met with so much negativity even outside the special effects that it might not get the opportunity to be a part of heavenside layer as much as it would like.

Ryan Pineda: When it comes to film, animation, video games and other mediums, I can discuss for hours about how much on why certain films and animated media made me the person I am today. I adore the artistic merit that comes from a lot of pop-culture media and will definitely love to have a conversation about favorite movies any day! I have graduated in 2017 with a BA in Film and Television at the University of Arizona. Been passionate about writing about films due to always having an interesting outlook on the medium. Will always see a film and will definitely be sure to recommend it to someone that I know for a fact would love that movie. Not only that but will also give reasons for why I think that film did or did not work as a movie, and the same can go for other pieces of media like television, video games and especially animated projects.
