The man who put True Detective on the map, Cary Joji Fukunaga, will breathe new life into the Bond franchise, as he has been selected to replaced Danny Boyle as the director for Bond 25. Deadline first reported the news.
Fukunaga will be the very first American director to helm a film in the long-running series. What won’t be changing, though, is the lead actor, as Daniel Craig, through all of the muck, is still attached to play the international super spy. Fukunaga has the blessing and/or curse of directing Craig in his last contracted appearance as James Bond.
Filming is set to begin in March with an expected February 14, 2020 release date.
The search for a new director began after Boyle dropped out of the project due to creative differences. At the helm, Boyle brought on his Trainspotting screenwriter John Hodge to write the script. This seemed too much of a creative risk for producers, prompting them to look elsewhere for directors.
Fukunaga is also the director behind Beasts of No Nation (a successful micro-budget film) and was a screenwriter on last year’s It. Coming up, his series with Jonah Hill and Emma Stone, Maniac, will soon be releasing on Netflix.
