Carol was the big winner coming out of the Toronto Film Critics Association. Todd Haynes’ 1950s lesbian romance starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara took both Best Film and Best Director for Haynes. Otherwise it was a fairly eclectic mix of awards season mainstays and longshots that dominated the line-up: Tom Hardy was cited for cited for his dual turn in the gangster drama Legend and Nina Hoss was mentioned for her work in the German art house hit Phoenix– both are likely not to figure into the overall Oscar conversation. Supporting actor winners Mark Rylance (for Steven Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies) and Alicia Vikander (for Alex Garland’s Ex Machina) however, have better chances as both performers were nominated for Golden Globes earlier this week.
