Actor Paul Dano (Little Miss Sunshine) is set to make his directorial debut with an adaptation of Richard Ford’s novel Wildlife. According to Variety, Carey Mulligan (Drive) and Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler) are confirmed to star in the film. The script was also adapted by Dano himself along with girlfriend and former co-star Zoe Kazan (What If).
The story tells of a teenage boy who watches as his parents’ marriage deteriorate after the family moves to Montana and his mother falls for another man.
Dano is pulling triple duty as he will also produce, while Kazan serves as executive producer with Eddie Vaisman. Gyllenhaal is also on board to produce through Nine Stories along with Duncan and Saks’ June Pictures. According to Andrew Duncan and Alex Saks,
Paul is a natural born storyteller — a force. We are thrilled to collaborate with him and these phenomenal actors to bring his exquisite vision for this film to life.
Gyllenhaal was last seen opposite Amy Adams at TIFF for the premiere of Tom Ford’s Nocturnal Animals, which absolutely blew away the critics. Through Nine Stories, Gyllenhaal has also recently produced the David Gordon Green directed Stronger for which he also stars. He will also soon be seen in Joon-ho Bong‘s Snowpiercer follow-up, Okja. Mulligan’s last on-screen appearance was in last year’s Suffragette. Audiences will soon get to see her again opposite Jason Clarke in Mudbound.
Production on Wildlife is set to begin in November in Montana and Oklahoma.
