Captain Marvel has just surpassed the total domestic box office intake of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 after now being in theaters for over a month, and now holds the #7 slot for highest grossing Marvel films. It has made over $390 million which is about a million over Guardians’ total gross. For a debut of a stand-alone hero, that is a significant marker of success. Black Panther though, has them both beat; for the hero’s first film it brought in a whopping $700 million, making it still the highest grossing Marvel film.
Captain Marvel’s theater count is on the decline as more big names come into theaters like Shazam! and Hellboy. However, it is still holding its own quite well. This past Monday and Wednesday the film had a 2% jump then an 8% jump from the week previous, showing that it is still drawing in a considerable viewership.
The release of Avengers: Endgame is right around the corner, which may be a motivator keeping the film going strong. Audiences need to catch up with all the current details before seeing the highly-anticipated epic conclusion to the past 10 years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now is the time when fans are rewatching every Marvel hero film, and since this one is still only in theaters, it keeps fans coming back for multiple viewings.
Endgame hits theaters on April 26, and Captain Marvel is rumored to have a large role in the fate of our favorite heroes. Endgame will likely bust all sorts of records, so be on the lookout for more Marvel news as it comes in.
