‘Captain Marvel’ Breaks Records with $153 Million Domestic Opening, $455 Worldwide

Despite the Rotten Tomatoes trolls sabotaging Captain Marvel’s user rating, the first female-headed Marvel film still performed on track and broke some records along the way with a $153 million domestic box office and $455 million worldwide.

This makes the film the largest global opening for a female-fronted film, surpassing Beauty and the Beast’s $357 million and making it the 6th highest worldwide opening of all time and 2nd largest for a comic book adaptation. The film is earning more money internationally than any other superhero film introducing a new hero.

It also surpassed Wonder Woman’s $103 million domestic earnings and is the 7th best performing Marvel film in North America. For a new Marvel character, Captain Marvel is trailing just behind Black Panther, which earned $200 million opening weekend.

With a budget of $150 million, the film is more than paying itself off and marks another great success for Marvel. It also marks a success for the 2019 domestic box office, which has been in a slump so far this year with most major releases underperforming.

Carol Danvers will appear again in Avengers: Endgame, which releases in May and is sure to dominate the box office like never before. See Captain Marvel in theaters now and check back for more updates.
