In a move that will shock very few, Marvel‘s latest blockbuster Captain America: Civil War has officially become the highest grossing film of the year at the domestic box office. The milestone occurred this past Saturday, when the film overtook 2016’s other comic book smash Deadpool (also Marvel, but part of Fox’s cinematic universe). Captain America has now brought in a whopping $377 million in North America since debuting on May 6th. Internationally, the movie has made an astounding $1.1 billion, by far the highest grossing title of 2016 and the only film this year so far to join the billion dollar club globally.
Domestically and abroad, Captain America: Civil War is the fourth highest grossing Marvel Cinematic Universe entry, behind The Avengers (2012), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) and Iron Man 3 (2013) and is far and away the highest grossing Captain America entry in Marvel’s history. The grosses of Age of Ultron ($459 million domestic / $1.4 billion overall) and Iron Man 3 ($409 million domestic / $1.2 billion overall) may be within Civil War‘s reach overall but the heft, franchise-topping, gross of the first Avengers film ($623 million domestic / $1.5 billion overall) isn’t realistically possible.
Captain America: Civil War will surely remain on top throughout the summer and likely won’t have to jockey it’s top slot until the end of the year when Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opens in theaters. In November, Marvel will release it’s second 2016 MCU property – Doctor Strange followed by an aggressive 2017 slate that includes Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Thor: Ragnarok.
