Captain America: Brave New World has now passed $200 million at the worldwide box office, boding fairly well for the film overall. While it fell short of the box office openings for The Winter Soldier and Civil War, it is still a healthy opening for the film. This is moderately surprising considering the critical response to the film. The film currently sports a 49% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, with many critics noting the film as being unremarkable and routine. However, an 80% audience score shows that the majority of audiences are at least having a decent time with the film.
When talking about the MCU as a whole, Captain America fits solidly in the middle for its opening box office pull. With 35 theatrical films, the franchise has now pulled in over $31 million globally. Brave New World will certainly contribute to this, but it is unclear how much as of yet. Poor critical response does not bode well for its chances of having a long tail, but lack of competition for the remainder of February could allow it to continue to thrive. The film dwarfed the domestic opening of Paddington in Peru the same weekend, and films such as The Monkey and The Unbreakable Boy will not be able to stand toe to toe with the superhero.
With March around the corner, other films may come in to steal some spotlight. Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17 releases on March 7, with Black Bag and Novocaine releasing a week later. As of now, it seems that Captain America won’t be going anywhere.
