For something completely different (and you better believe different) comes John Cameron Mitchell’s upcoming feature film How to Talk to Girls at Parties. Based on the short story by celebrated writer Neil Gaiman, this bonkers youth romance stars Elle Fanning (20th Century Women) as an alien who falls for a punk teenage boy (Alex Sharp) in 1970s London; oh and Nicole Kidman co-stars as what appears to be world’s most fabulous glam rock star. Before the film’s world premiere at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival (where it screens as a Midnight title this weekend), Gaiman, Fanning and Mitchell took to Instagram to share our first look at the title in a trio of madcap and bewitching teasers.
This looks like a fun chapter in Mitchell’s increasingly diverse filmography that includes the heralded indie musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch, the polysexual comedy Shortbus and the straight drama Rabbit Hole, which also featured Kidman in an Oscar nominated performance.
For Fanning and Kidman, How to Talk to Girls at Parties represents but one of their features premiering at Cannes this year. Both actors also appear in the competition title The Beguiled, the last from director Sophia Coppola. Kidman, in particular, will have a mighty busy festival as she also appears in the competition title The Killing of a Sacred Deer for director Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster) – that film stars Colin Farrell (also in The Beguiled). She also co-stars in Jane Campion’s Top of the Lake: China Girl, a limited series that will premiere at Cannes.
As for How to Talk to Girls at Parties, A24 Films is expected to release the film sometime later this year. Ruth Wilson and Matt Lucas co-star. Mitchell adapted the film alongside Philippa Goslett (Little Ashes).
