Netflix’s original horror movie, Bird Box, is considered a big hit. However, the film and Netflix have come under some major scrutiny from the Canadian government for using real footage of a Canadian train accident. The accident, which occurred in July 2013, is considered one of the worst in Canadian history and claimed the lives of at least 47 people. According to IndieWire, Julie Morin, who is the Mayor of Lac-Mégantic, the city in which the accident occurred, has criticized Netflix for capitalizing on the tragedy.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Netflix will not comply with the criticism and will not remove the footage from Bird Box. In response, the Canadian Parliament filed a motion against Netflix, demanding that the company compensate the citizens of Lac-Mégantic who are traumatized enough by the tragedy without having to relive it through a film.
