The upcoming Call of Duty movie will officially be set in the Modern Warfare universe. The announcement was made official on Sunday: the movie will be set within the universe of the popular subseries of Activision’s massively successful video game franchise, which has sold over 500 million copies across several decades of releases. Director Peter Perg broke the news at the “Call of Duty Culture” Panel held during Fanatics Fest in New York City. The panel was meant to generate hype for the upcoming release of the newest game in the Call of Duty series, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, with the film announcement provided as a bonus.
Peter Berg is directing the film from a script co-written with Taylor Sheridan, creator of Yellowstone and screenwriter of Sicario. In addition, Berg and Sheridan are also producing the film, along with Activision president Rob Kositch and Sheridan’s longtime producing partner, David Glasser.
The announcement of this Call of Duty movie was originally made in late 2025 as a collaboration between Paramount and Activision. While specific plot details are being kept under wraps, it can be inferred that by setting the film in the Modern Warfare universe, the film will center on more modern, realistic geopolitical conflicts, rather than the historic or futuristic settings and plots of other Call of Duty games, such as the original series or the Black Ops subseries. The setting also allows for possible appearances by fan-favorite characters such as Captain Price, Ghost, and Soap MacTavish.
Paramount Pictures has the Call of Duty movie slated for a theatrical release on June 30, 2028.
