‘Call Jane’ Casts Huge Stars Elizabeth Banks, Sigourney Weaver, Kate Mara, & Rupert Friend for Women’s Rights Film

Elizabeth Banks, Sigourney Weaver, Kate Mara, and Rupert Friend have been cast in Call Jane, film about women’s rights directed by academy award nominated screenwriter Phyllis Nagy. The script is based off a script penned by Hayley Schore and Roshan Sethi from The Blacklist, Deadline reports.

Not to be confused with the TV series, The Blacklist, the site, The Blacklist, is for aspiring and working screenwriters to get their work seen. This is the second Blacklist script in recent months to begin pre-production with huge A-List stars attached to the project. The other, Francis And The Godfather, has Oscar Isaac and Jake Gyllenhaal on board.

The film is about Joy(Banks), a traditional 1960’s wife that falls unexpectedly pregnant. She stumbles upon an underground abortion group named “The Janes,” led by Virginia(Weaver). She finds solace in the group and helps to fight for women’s reproductive rights.

Phyliss Nagy, mainly a theatre writer and director, but also an avid Dodgers fan, based solely off her latest Twitter posts, has made the jump to film in recent years. She previously was nominated for an Emmy for the TV movie Mrs. Harris starring Annette Bening and Ben Kingsley. In addition her script for Carol, starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, garnered her an Oscar nomination.

Schore and Sethi, who penned the screenplay, have mainly TV writing credits. This will be their first feature, though they have enough good standing in the industry that they will both be executive producers on Call Jane

Nagy is no stranger to women’s stories, new film writers, and Mara siblings so this film is coming along nicely in its early stages of pre-production. Originally Elisabeth Moss and Susan Sarandon were attached to play Joy and Virginia, but had to drop due to scheduling conflicts. Though Banks and Weaver are gigantic stars in their own right.

This film is still in pre-production, but filming dates are sure to begin soon as well as an eventual release date in either late 2021 or early 2022.
