Bryan Cranston, Laurence Fishburne and Steve Carrell to Star in Richard Linklater’s Next Film

Richard Linklater has worked with a great number of fantastic actors over his 20 year career, and it looks like Bryan Cranston, Laurence Fishburne and Steve Carrell might be the latest ones to join his next feature. The stars are currently in talks to star in his next movie, Last Flag Flying. The project is his long-in-the-works semi-sequel to the dramedy The Last Detail.

Darryl Ponicsan’s 1970 novel was made into a 1973 film directed by Hal Ashby and starring Jack Nicholson, Randy Quaid and Otis Young. The Last Detail received great reviews and was nominated for three Oscars. Nicholson and Young stars as two Navy men who are ordered to bring a young offender (Quaid) to prison, but they decide to give him one last good experience along the way.

Last Flag is Ponicsan’s 2005 follow-up to The Last Detail, which reunites the trio now living in a post-9/11 American life. The Navy officers have come to the aid of the former prisoner to help bring home his son’s body from Iraq.

Linklater first spoke about adapting the book ten years ago, and was hoping to reunite Nicholson and Quaid. Young unfortunately passed away in 2001, but Linklater thought about Morgan Freeman taking on his role. According to sources at The Hollywood Reporter, Amazon Studios has landed Linklater’s film.

Shooting is said to begin in November.
