The forthcoming black comedy thriller Holland, Michigan starring Naomi Watts and directed by Errol Morris appears to be taking shape. Bryan Cranston, still awash in the afterglow of Breaking Bad, and Edgar Ramirez look likely to co-star. The film was written by newcomer Andrew Sodroski, whose script was placed on 2013 Black List of the best un-produced screenplays in Hollywood. The film is readying for a release date sometime in 2015. Holland, Michigan tells the story of suburban teacher (Watts) who begins to suspect something may be off with her husband (to be played by Cranston) – that he may be a serial killer – just as she starts an affair with a co-worker with a mysterious past, to be played by Ramirez.
The film likely may by Cranston’s most challenging role since he put his multiple Emmy winning Walter White to rest. He next will be seen on screen in this summer’s reboot of Godzilla. Ramirez, a versatile actor who has popped up in films like Zero Dark Thirty and The Bourne Ultimatum in recent years, made a major breakthrough a few years back with his Golden Globe nominated performance in Olivier Assayas’ Carlos, a mini-series based on the life and exploits of Venezuelan revolutionary Ilich Ramírez Sánchez.
Morris made the cast announcements public while participating in a Reddit Q&A to promote the Oscar-nominated documentary The Act of Killing, of which he is a producer. “I’m making a dramatic feature this year with Bryan Cranston, Naomi Watts and Edgar Ramirez,” Morris confirmed. The director is a legend in the documentary world, having won an Academy Award for 2003’s The Fog of War, a film that profiled former Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara. He also made the critically lauded The Thin Blue Line, A Brief History of Time and Tabloid. Holland, Michigan marks only his second narrative feature following the relatively obscure 1991 film The Dark World, which starred Lou Diamond Phillps.
