Bruce Greenwood is joining James Vanderbilt’s Truth, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The veteran actor joins Robert Redford (All is Lost), Cate Blanchett (How to Train Your Dragon 2), Dennis Quaid (Footloose), Elisabeth Moss (Listen Up Philip), Topher Grace (Predators), and John Benjamin Hickey (Get On Up) in the political drama detailing the repercussions of a 60 Minutes report by Dan Rather in 2004 that covered the special treatment George W. Bush received serving in the Air National Guard to avoid the Vietnam War.
With Robert Redford and Cate Blanchett headlining as Rather and producer Mary Mapes, respectively, Greenwood has been cast to play Andrew Heyward, the president of CBS News who went on to fire Mapes after the media backlash concerning their report. The film is based on Mapes’ book Truth and Duty: The Press, the President, and the Privilege of Power.
Greenwood may be recognized more recently for his work in science fiction movies, having collaborated with director J.J. Abrams on Star Trek, Star Trek Into Darkness, and Super 8 as well as with Alex Proyas in I, Robot. The character actor, however, has starred in an array of varying genres and roles in his career, from romance to horror. He even did political-based work in Roger Donaldson’s 2000 film Thirteen Days, where he played President John F. Kennedy. That film dealt with President Kennedy’s attempt to contain the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962.
Truth is currently shooting in Blanchett’s native Australia.
