Oscar winner (and future Captain Marvel) Brie Larson may be looking quite presidential in an upcoming role. Deadline broke the news that Larson appears primed to lead Victoria Woodhull for Amazon Studios. The biopic focuses on first female presidential candidate of the United States, Victoria Woodhull. The upcoming project comes with a screenplay by Ben Kopit, yet doesn’t appear to have a director enlisted just yet. As well as leading the film, Larson will also produce the title.
The enticing project follows the incredible trajectory of Woodhull, who would be this country’s first female Presidential candidate all the way back in 1872. For history buffs, that was more than forty years before women secured the vote. Described as a women’s liberator, non-conformist, conniver, narcissist, politician, and rebel, Woodhull was a suffragette encouraged by her con-artist father. Further enticing, Woodhull would present herself as if she were conjuring spirits in front of crowds in efforts to lead her cause. This unorthodox way of politicking lead to her success as well as to her downfall.
Since winning the Oscar for Best Actress for her 2015 breakout Room, Larson appears to displaying quite the versatility in her film choices. She can currently be seen in monster epic Kong: Skull Island and is readying her Marvel debut as Captain Marvel in next year’s Avengers: Infinity War as well as the Captain Marvel standalone vehicle set to open in 2019. Outside of blockbuster fare, Larson will soon be featured in Ben Wheatley’s shoot-em-up indie Free Fire, the upcoming musical romance Basmati Blues and the drama The Glass Castle, which reunites her with her Short Term 12 director Destin Daniel Cretton.
Larson also makes her directorial debut (and stars in) the upcoming comedy Unicorn Store.
