In the wake of the trailer releasing for Avatar: Fire And Ash, more snippets of information about the story have been slowly revealed to fans. Among these come the recent confirmation that a supporting character from The Way Of Water will be back for the new film.
The Way Of Water introduced audiences to the Metkayina, a tribe of ocean-dwelling Na’vi that Sam Worthington’s Jake Sully takes his family to live among. The Metkayina keep a close relationship to the Tulkun, a sophisticated race of animals akin to whales, with each member of the tribe bonded to a specific Tulkun. But the Tulkun are hunted by the invasive humans on Pandora, with one human in particular holding a grudge against them.
Brendan Cowell, who appeared in Salem’s Lot and Beneath Hill 60, played Mick Scoresby, the head of a group of Tulkun hunters commandeered by Stephen Lang’s Quaritch. During the climax of Way Of Water, the main Tulkun of the film, Payakan, successfully wrecked Scoresby’s boat, causing him to lose an arm in the process. But, as MovieWeb pointed out, that doesn’t mean he’s out for good.
When Cowell was recently speaking to Empire Magazine about Fire And Ash, he told them about what kind of role Scoresby will be playing going forward.
He explained that originally Scoresby had an attitude that suggested he only cared about something if it could benefit him at all, while his dialogue suggested he was really in it for the money.
“He’s not in it for the wind, the hair, the laughs, or the money this time. He lost his last fight; he knows there’s this generational, ancestral hatred towards him, and so this time it’s personal. It’s destructive,” he said, according to MovieWeb.
His return may be something of a surprise for moviegoers, as well. As it was presented in the theatrical version, the last time viewers see him was as he was flung into the ocean just after losing his arm, leading audiences to possibly assume his death. However, a selected scene included in the home release showed him being pulled out of the water, armless, by his team, his usual attitude not skipping a beat.
Avatar: Fire And Ash hits theaters December 19th.
