Breeders Review – Weird but Addicting

Breeders might be the most out of the blue movie of the year. It is very unclear what would have inspired this film besides, perhaps, the filmmakers being true crime fans. That is a compliment. It is a movie that is not an easy watch. To be a fly on the wall of a conversation after this movie that audiences have, would be quite the experience.

To call this movie strange would be an understatement. Perhaps that is the point. If filmmakers can’t take risks every once in a while, then what is really the point of making movies? Breeders might be the most uncomfortable viewing of the year. Without giving the whole story away, this movie is about a guy named Russell who is a down on his luck scientist that needs funding for his research on breeding bees. A woman who breeds dogs invites him to dinner to offer to fund his research. Strange? Absolutely. But this movie reminded me of a movie I loved from 2024 with Jason Statham, called The Beekeeper. Admittedly, they do not actually have much in common. But they both have a heavy focus on bees.

I really do not want to spoil this movie, because clearly the filmmakers behind this movie wanted the shock value to be the thing that they prioritized the most. So what I will say is that the woman who offers to fund Russell’s research offers him a blank check for the bee breeding in return for a breeding favor of her own.

The suspense alone makes this movie worth the viewing. It disregards the typical structure of most movies and really puts the audience through the blender.

One thing that doesn’t make sense, however, is the fact that Russell decides to trust a total stranger. But perhaps greed is the underlying message of the movie. The lead character is down on his luck and wanting to start a family of his own. He is not evil. But he is desperate. And in that desperation, he does things that he probably would normally just avoid and run away from.

The best part of the movie is easily the editing. For a low budget film, the crew behind the cameras give the audience their money’s worth. Particularly in a dinner scene where they cut between the actors and it feels seamless.

The twists and turns that happen in this movie make something that feels like a thriller disguised as a drama. The writing and performances carry this film. While these actors are at least relatively unknown, they give it their all and do not make you question if this could really happen.

The type of audience that this film is made for are the hardcore movie fans. Mainstream audiences will probably be too shocked by this film to stay seated. It is an uncomfortable watch. But not a movie that thriller fans should skip.

I give this film 3 out of 5 stars.
