On top of the theatrical re-release of the trilogy, and a brand new animated film, there is another film based on The Lord Of The Rings on the horizon. Under the working title The Lord Of The Rings: The Hunt For Gollum, the new feature will bring back Andy Serkis as the titular character Gollum, a hobbit twisted and corrupted by the power of the One Ring. Serkis will also direct the new installment in the franchise.
Alongside the return of Serkis, Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens, who all worked on the first film trilogy, “will be involved every step of the way.” Walsh will serve as producer and will co-write the screenplay with Boyens.
As Hollywood Reporter notes, David Zaslav, CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, made it clear that they will play a critical part in the film’s production. He also stated that the same team will work on a second film, on top of Hunt For Gollum.
While the script for Hunt For Gollum is still being worked on, the events that transpire were discussed in the Fellowship Of The Ring book, in which Gandalf the Gray and Aragorn track down Gollum to learn what he knows about the One Ring.
Regarding the upcoming project, Andy Serkis, in Gollum fashion, said, “Yesssss, Precious. The time has come once more to venture into the unknown with my dear friends, the extraordinary and incomparable guardians of Middle-earth Peter, Fran, and Philippa.”
The Hunt For Gollum is on track to release around 2026.
