On Thursday, Warner Brothers and Apple Studios released a new trailer for F1, the Brad Pitt-led racing drama from Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski. This latest trailer gives a better look into the film’s story than the previous teaser trailer released last July.
“Some people look at Sonny Hayes and see a guy who lives in a van. A gambling junkie who missed his shot. The Best there never was. But I see possibility”, Javier Bardem’s character, Ruben, says in voiceover in the trailer’s opening, with corresponding visuals, introducing us to Brad Pitt’s Sonny Hayes as a character.
The trailer then details the story, showing that the film will be about Pitt’s Sonny Hayes mentoring a new Formula One racer, played by Damson Idris. “My rook is a phenomenal talent. But he’s young”, says Bardem’s Ruben in voiceover, describing Damson Idris’s character, Joshua. The trailer also gives a glimpse at the rivalry that will spark between Sonny and Joshua. “There’s this new guy. He’s old. He’s such a prick. But he’s quick”, says Idris’s Joshua in the trailer, giving us an idea of his relationship with Pitt’s Sonny. The trailer also provides brief glimpses of the romance between Sonny Hayes and Kerry Condon’s Kate.
Most of all, the trailer provides more footage of the racing sequences, which were shot using camera equipment similar to the ones used to shoot the flight sequences in Top Gun: Maverick. According to a quote from The Hollywood Reporter, given at a press event for this new trailer, director Joseph Kosinski explained the biggest challenge he and his crew faced shooting the racing sequences:
“The big challenge was just the camera system itself. We had to develop a brand new camera system taking everything we learned on Top Gun: Maverick and pushing it much further. You can’t put 60 pounds of gear onto a race car and expect it’s going to perform the same way.”
Warner Bros. will release F1 in standard, large format, and IMAX theaters on June 25th. The film will then be available to stream on Apple TV+ at a later date. Check out the trailer below.
