A bright hopeful for the upcoming award season dropped the first trailer today. Boy Erased is a film that goes into the world of gay conversion therapy and comes out the other end hopeful. The picture is based on the critically acclaimed memoir of the same name. It strives to bring awareness to the harm religious factions that believe changing the identity of a person (in this case, one’s sexuality) can have.
Jared Conley, played by Lucas Hedges, is a 19 year old college student who is living in an idealized world. The problem is that most everything in his existence is fake or for show. The trailer reveals that while Jared may hold the interest of a girl, his own interests lie elsewhere. Eventually, Conley is outed to his Baptist parents, played by Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman, who insist on making him go to a church sponsored gay conversion program to rehabilitate him. The ultimatum given is to either go or be disowned. Threatened with the worst from both family and friends, Conley agrees to the therapy camp that claims they can turn him into a heterosexual. The harrowing tale sees Conley clashing with the head of the program portrayed by actor and director Joel Edgerton.
This will make Edgerton’s second directorial presentation, following his success with 2015’s The Gift. With an Oscar nomination already under Edgerton’s belt and the premier acting skills from Hedges, Kidman, and Crowe, Boy Erased is sure to be a hot nominee for the Oscars.
Boy Erased is set to be released November 2. Watch the film’s full-length trailer below featuring an original song by singer and cast member Troye Sivan.
