Box Office: ‘The Fate of the Furious’ Breaks $1 Billion Worldwide

It’s no surprise the Fast and Furious franchise has been a monster success in the box office. With 2015’s Furious 7 being the first in the franchise to cross the $1 billion mark and the tragic death of Paul Walker, it’s not a surprise that the franchise would continue to move forward. The Fate of the Furious already broke the highest opening weekend record worldwide when it brought in $532 million in sales and on April 30th, a mere two weeks after it’s worldwide release, the film crossed the $1 billion worldwide dollar mark, making it the second in the franchise to do so.

It also makes it the second highest-grossing film in 2017 behind Beauty and the Beast and the fifth film from Universal Studios to make it into the billion dollar club. F. Gary Gray, the director of the film, is now the first African-American director to make a film that earned over a billion in sales; he previously directed the smash Straight Outta Compton. The Fate of the Furious will also be remembered as being the 30th film to gross over a billion dollars. Other films to do so include Titanic, Skyfall, and Marvel’s The Avengers.

With two sequels already being announced we will have to wait and see how far Fast and Furious franchise will earn in box office sales. After eight films, the series has earned over $4.8 billion combined, making it Universal’s biggest franchise of all time. We will keep you updated as news of the future installments is announced. Stay tuned to see how much Fate of the Furious will earn while still in theaters.

Rick Rice: A kid at heart who has loved watching movies from a very young age. Credit must be given to Siskel and Ebert whose film reviews educated me on the world of film inspired me to become a writer myself. I love to read books that range from various topics, copious amounts of research is something that excites me and of course sitting in a movie theater is a highlight of my life. When I'm not watching movies or reading I enjoy listening to foreign music and working hard on finishing my short stories. Currently working on my degree in English with a plan to enroll into Film School with the dream of becoming a screenwriter and director.
