The Super Mario Bros. has continued to dominate box office records by earning $1 billion worldwide. Alongside Evil Dead Rise, the plumber brothers have continued to draw in a large crowd from the 25 and under demographic.
As of Sunday, the film has earned $40 million this weekend, beating The Incredibles 2’s fourth-weekend earnings at $28.4 million, not to mention beating Jurassic World’s $29.3 million, the fourth-best for Universal Studios. Additionally, it has managed to become Illumination Studio’s third highest-grossing animated feature after Minions and Despicable Me 3. With all of this combined, The Super Mario Bros. has managed to earn $491 million domestically, allowing it to make its way to $1 billion and become the fifth highest-grossing film during the pandemic era.
According to a source from CinemaCon, their exhibitors have chosen to use a sliding percentage scale over the course of several weekends. Normally, they would play the movie at a 63% flat fee to Universal, allowing them to keep some of the earnings. CinemaCon instead chose to start at 63% this weekend and slowly move it down to 35% in later weekends. As a result, they have managed to earn more from this box office giant, which will most likely continue to earn in the top 10 all the way into the summer.
