Success at the box office continues this weekend, as multiple entries in the Top 10 are multi-week films that have found continued audiences. Ryan Coogler’s vampire-thriller, Sinners, keeps its coveted place at first, adding $45 million to its total earnings. In fact, the film now holds the title of smallest second-weekend drop for any film opening above $40 million since Avatar in 2009 and is the smallest ever for an R-rated horror title. The film is being received by audiences exceptionally, with word-of-mouth acting as a prominent aid to its second-weekend success.
Originally, Amazon MGM Studios’ The Accountant 2 was projected to majorly contend with Sinners – that is, before a certain multi-generationally beloved franchise’s re-release “outperformed” against the action film. Disney’s Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith 20th anniversary reissue has proven that nostalgia farming isn’t all lost. The prequel trilogy-capper, which is regarded by many fans as one of the best in the Skywalker Saga, has traveled past $25 million domestically. Revenge of the Sith is now one of the most successful re-releases of all time. For comparison, 2024’s Episode I – The Phantom Menace reissue earned $8.7 million on its opening weekend, while Return of the Jedi brought home $5.1 million in 2023.
The Accountant 2, starring Ben Affleck, instead debuts at third place. The film, which sees Affleck as a forensic accountant in pursuit of dangerous assassins, earned just over $24 million. Accountant 2 co-stars Jon Bernthal, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Daniella Pineda, and J.K. Simmons. Not a bad first week for the action film, but it’s had a much harder time competing for male-skewed attention against Sinners and RotS. The more family-aimed Minecraft Movie breaks a divide, and holds on strong to the box office top 5, sitting at fourth place in its fourth week. Minecraft earned $22.7 million this weekend, adding to its impressive $379 million sum.
Rounding out fifth place is Screen Gem and Sony’s latest horror flick, Until Dawn, based on the popular 2015 PlayStation video game. Though inspired by the game, the film takes place in a mythology separate from the source material’s tactics. The survival horror film stars Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino, Odessa A’Zion, Ji-young You, Belmont Cameli, Maia Mitchell, and Peter Stormare, who also appears in the game. The cast appears as a friend group who find themselves stuck in a deadly time loop, facing off against many untold horrors of video game and genre-homaging inspirations alike. The group finds out that the only way to survive the loop is to make it til sunrise unscathed. Until Dawn earned just over $8 million in its debut.
Sixth place goes to the Christian animated film The King of Kings in its third week, still riding high off Easter success at $4 million. Also at their third week in at the movies, and the top 10, are 20th Century Studios’ The Amateur starring Rami Malek and A24’s Alex Garland war film Warfare. The films come in seventh and eighth place, earning $3.8 million and $2.6 million, respectively.
Another re-release, the 1972 concert film Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii, has also filled seats at the movies. Just over 60 minutes, the show depicts legendary English rock band Pink Floyd playing at an ancient Roman amphitheater in Pompeii, Italy. Rounding out our list at tenth goes to A24 fantasy film The Legend of Ochi. The film features performances by Helena Zengel, Finn Wolfhard, Emily Watson, and Willem Dafoe. The film follows a young girl as she befriends the titular creature. She then sets off on a journey to reunite it with its family. The A24 film currently sits at an 80% certified fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes. It grossed $1.4 million at this weekend’s box office.
