Paul Greengrass has been assigned to direct and produce the upcoming adaptation of T.J. Newman’s bestselling novel Drowning: The Rescue of Flight 1421. Won by Warner Bros. in a bidding war in March, the thriller will reunite Greengrass and Warner Bros. head Michael De Luca after their previous collaboration on Captain Phillips.
This announcement came after it was announced that All Quiet on the Western Front director Edward Berger would be helming the latest entry in the Bourne Identity franchise. Greengrass had directed the previous film, Jason Bourne, along with two other entries in the series. Based on his experiences writing suspenseful stories with human elements woven in, many believed he would be the ideal director to help bring Newman’s story to life.
Drowning follows the titular Flight 1421 after it crashed in the Pacific Ocean six minutes after take-off and flooded during evacuation. A sealed piece of the plane breaks off and sinks onto an underwater cliff 200 feet below the sea, containing a dozen passengers inside. An elite team is sent out to rescue the passengers before their air runs out. Amongst the team is a woman whose estranged husband and daughter are currently trapped inside the sealed plane section.
T.J. Newman wrote her debut novel Falling while working as a flight attendant and sold it for three impressive seven-figure deals with Avid Reader and Simon Schuster. The book became the fastest-selling debut novel from Simon and Schuster since 2004 and even landed a $1.5 million movie deal with Universal Studios and Working Title.
Drowning attained similar success, quickly climbed to the New York Bestseller list, and was named Best Book of the Year by Amazon, Waterstones, and many more publishers.
So far, there has been no news regarding the production start dates or release dates.
