After a limited 10-theater release, Emma Seligman-directed Bottoms will expand into 750 theaters nationwide. The expansion comes after the film brought in over $500,000 in revenue from the ten theaters in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Austin in one weekend. Since the film opened, it has made nearly $725,000.
The raunchy high school comedy, starring Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri, has proven popular with younger and LGBTQ+ audiences. So far, the film gained a 95% score from critics and 97% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. It marks another positive score for the Seligman/Sennott duo, who previously collaborated on 2020’s Shiva Baby, and another positive score for husband-wife duo Elizabeth Banks and Max Handelman at Brownstone Productions after Cocaine Bear.
Ernest & Celestine: A Trip To Gibberitia, a follow-up to 2012’s Oscar-nominated Ernest & Celestine, directed by Jean-Christophe Roger and Julien Chheng, is also opening in 25 theaters. It was previously released in France last December and is being tested for audiences in the United States in English.
Viva Films is distributing R.L. Stine’s Zombie Town to 173 locations in time for Halloween. The film stars Chevy Chase and Dan Ackroyd. Nandor Fodor and the Talking Mongoose, written and directed by Adam Sigal, is also set for a limited release. The film stars Simon Pegg, Minnie Driver, and Christopher Lloyd and features the voice of Neil Gaiman as the talking mongoose.
