Warner Bros. Korea plans to release Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17 in Korea one week before its global release. Audiences in South Korea will be able to see the Academy Award-winning director’s film on February 28 while the global theatrical release is scheduled for March 7.
Joon Ho’s previous film Parasite is considered a masterpiece and reached global acclaim in 2019. The film won the top prize at Cannes and became the first foreign film to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Parasite has an impressive 99% from 483 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes,
The upcoming sci-fi thriller includes Robert Pattinson, Toni Collette, Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, and Mark Ruffalo. Adapted from the 2022 novel Mickey 7 by Edward Ashton, the $118 million production follows Mickey Barnes (Pattinson) a cloned “expendable” employee sent on a journey to colonize the ice world. Joon Ho wrote, directed, and produced the film through his production company Offscreen.
Originally set for release in 2024, the film has set several release dates because of IMAX release windows and the Hollywood strikes. Now the film will compete with Disney’s Snow White at the box office.
Pattinson and Joon Ho begin their promotional tour at CGV Yongsan in South Korea on January 20.
