While the biopic Bob Marley: One Love has soared with a Valentine’s Day opening at about $14 million, Madame Web is struggling to catch up with only $6 million. In addition to its financial earnings, One Love has beat Madame Web in winning many critics’ and audiences’ hearts.
Both films were released on Valentine’s Day to bring in couples going out for the evening as well as bringing in other moviegoers over President’s Day weekend. With this in mind, Paramount has claimed that One Love was the highest mid-week Valentine’s opening, beating out the 2012 romance The Vow. Even so, it’s still early to know how well it will do at the box office moving forward.
Still, there is a strong chance that One Love could beat Madame Web again over the six days through President’s Day. According to some analysts, there is a chance that One Love could surpass Madame Web by about $30 million. Meanwhile, the latter film will probably earn about $25-27 million by next week.
Even though both films had their detractors, One Love is still winning the hearts of most audiences. While its Rotten Tomatoes score is about 44%, its CinemaScore resulted in an A for the audience. In contrast, Madame Web sits at 15% on Rotten Tomatoes and scored a C+ on CinemaScore. With both films on hand-to-hand combat over who will surpass the other, there may still be room for a surprise regarding Madame Web’s lackluster debut.
