Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, many films have gone straight to streaming. Some examples include Mulan, which is streaming on Disney Plus, and Jason Woliner’s Borat 2, which was released on Amazon just last week. Because of this, it was a surprise to many that Freaky will be shown in theaters. According to Screenrant, the film is allowed to be playing in cinemas due to Universal’s new deal with AMC theaters.
The film is a dark twisted take on Freaky Friday, and stars Kathryn Newton as a seventeen year old high school girl who switches bodies with a ruthless serial killer portrayed by Vince Vaughn. Similar to Freaky Friday, Kathryn Newton’s character has only twenty four hours to get her body back before the switch becomes permanent and she’s trapped in the killer’s body forever. The killer is also on a city-wide manhunt, so she has to switch before she is also locked up forever. Freaky also stars Celeste O’Connor, Misha Osherovich, Uriah Shelton, Alan Ruck, Katie Finneran and Dana Drori. We’ll have to wait and see how it does in the box office, and hopefully it being released on Friday the 13th isn’t bad luck.
