December 2026 is coming quickly and Marvel fans are counting down to the theatrical release of the highly anticipated Doomsday segment of the resurged Avengers saga. It’s been about 7 years since the last Avengers film was released (that notoriously delivered gut-wrenching character exits) and only a series of teaser trailers have been released so far (as trailers during theater showings of Avatar: Fire and Ash) but with Comic Con 2026 just around the corner at the end of July, more surprises may be in store for fans (rumor has it that the official trailer will premiere here).
When the directors, Joe & Anthony Russo (brothers who also worked together to produce other successful works, like the popular MGM+ series From), discussed Doomsday during a panel at SXSW London, they explained that they approached the creation of the its concept with the attitude of “starting from scratch” and assured all that this movie would not be like the ones that came before (including the predecessors directed by the brothers, Avengers: Infinity War & Endgame). They further expressed that they felt like taking a step in a different direction was the best decision and stated in a separate discussion at Deadline’s Live Studio at SXSW London that they keep returning because they simply love the audience (while also implying another Marvel collaboration with the video game, Fortnite). It can be assumed that the detour was caused for a variety of reasons, especially considering the contrast in box office numbers between earlier and more recent MCU films (Endgame garnered at least $1 billion during its opening weekend, which led to nearly earning $3 billion worldwide & it became the 2nd film in history to accomplish this).
It seems this tactic is being used to help build more enthusiasm for the film since the most recent Marvel Studios films were described as lackluster by fans & critics alike, so steering away from the franchise’s previous projects felt like the best strategy for the filmmakers. Other significant hindrances include the unfortunate legal issues that caused Jonathan Majors to be dropped from all upcoming Marvel projects that have since been uprooted and caused a lot of confusion as to where these stories would lead next. Though teaser trailers were released at the beginning of the year, theater owners and fans were given more insight on what the film will look like when a full cinematic trailer was released soon after in April exclusively at CinemaCon.

The film is set to continue from where Endgame‘s plot line left off according to Marvel Studios President, Kevin Feige when he stated that it will be “a direct sequel” (in the IG post above) while at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, NV. Doomsday‘s appointed (and previous writer of Avengers films) writer, Stephen McFeely had suggested this approach when pitching his script to Marvel Studios with a groundbreaking idea that inspired many lightbulbs to ignite to develop the upcoming saga addition. With the Russo bros stating at UK’s SXSW that they “started at ground zero” when brainstorming Doomsday is nearly literal considering the moniker and the ongoing apocalyptic theme, along with the nearly tragic conclusion of Endgame.

Two notable returns that hugely indicate a loving revival of the 2010’s version of Marvel’s MCU: Robert Downey Jr. & Chris Evans, though one is reprising their role and the other is embodying a whole new one. Despite some feeling weary of RDJ appearing again as a completely different character (see here for a fun theory video on how Tony Stark could also be Doom), the creative team’s eloquently cosmic idea that allows favorite characters to appear again via a multiverse is said to be the breath of life to a franchise that is in dire need of a resurrection.
