With Aquaman currently doing swimmingly at the worldwide box office, most are pleased by the success of Jason Momoa‘s muscle-bound depiction of the fishy DC hero. One person who is less than pleased, however, is actor Billy Eichner, who look to Jimmy Kimmel Live! dressed as Marvel character Namor the Sub-Mariner to express his frustration at Aquaman’s newfound glory. Having debuted in 1939, Namor is technically the first of the aquatic superheroes, beating Aquaman’s comic book appearance by two years. Both characters have similar powers and nearly identical backstories, so it’s easy to see why Namor would harbor resentment towards Aquaman‘s success.
In a skit where Kimmel mocks Eichner’s Namor, the Sub-Mariner appears to embody the laughing-stock persona that Aquaman tried so hard to escape when he made his cinematic debut in 2017’s Justice League. As he withstands Kimmel’s verbal assault, Namor fights back by wielding the glorious Horn of Proteus, which allows him to summon and control powerful aquatic sea creatures such as Gavin, the mighty dolphin. Eichner does ensure that he pokes a verbal trident at Kimmel in the process, making fun of the talk show host in a profanity-laced tirade.
Namor has remained in cinematic captivity since the movie rights were sold to Universal years ago, and though Marvel and Disney have since made progress on reacquiring many of the characters that they lost, Namor’s film future remains cloudy. In the meantime, you can view Eichner’s amusing portrayal of the beleaguered underwater hero below.
