The new trailer for Focus Features’ The Phoenician Scheme has been released. It highlights a recognizable ensemble case and showcases director Wes Anderson’s signature eccentric style. Already his fourth film this decade, the film comes on the heels of Anderson’s The French Dispatch (2021), Asteroid City (2023), and The Wonderful World of Henry Sugar and Three More (2024). The Phoenician Scheme trailer sees Benicio Del Toro leading a troupe of returning performers, including Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Jeffrey Wright, Scarlett Johansson, Rupert Friend, Benedict Cumberbatch, Bill Murray, and Willem Dafoe. New additions to Anderson’s universe include Michael Cera, Mia Threapleton, and Riz Ahmed.
Del Toro stars as one of the air travel tycoon Zsa-zsa Korda and one of the “richest men in Europe” as he sets off on what he calls the “most important project” of his lifetime. In the trailer, Korda speaks to his daughter Liesl, a nun portrayed by Mia Threapleton, announcing he intends to leave his estate to her in his wake, should his scheme go awry. Michael Cera also appears as Liesl’s tutor, Bjorn Lund. The rest of the trailer comprises of authorities and terrorists hot on Korda’s trail and other characters participating in classic Anderson cartoon-esque antics.
In a conversation with French publication Le Monde in 2023, Anderson said of the film “My next feature will be linear, with Benicio Del Toro in every shot. I can’t tell you much more than that except that it will be about espionage, a father-daughter relationship, and let’s say, with a rather dark tone.” The script comes from Anderson by a story with frequent collaborator Roman Coppola. Their 2012 venture Moonrise Kingdom was nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards.
The Phoenician Scheme is predicted to be a part of 2025’s Cannes lineup announced April 10. The film will get a limited release on May 30, followed by a national release on June 6. Watch the trailer below.
