As the use of AI in filmmaking becomes an increasingly prevalent topic, more talents, both in front of and behind the camera, have shared their thoughts on the technology. Among these voices is Ben Affleck, who recently spoke about the potential role of AI in the industry and its limitations as a creative tool.
During the CNBC Delivering Alpha summit in 2024, Affleck emphasized AI’s inability to craft a compelling story, particularly one fit for film. He explained that while AI might produce something “that sounds Elizabethan,” it “cannot write you Shakespeare.”
The use of artificial intelligence has been a contentious issue in the film industry, with some strongly opposing its implementation. Others, however, have expressed support for its use in managing smaller, less creative tasks.
Affleck aligns with the latter perspective. Speaking to David Farber at the summit, he suggested that AI could open more opportunities for individuals to bring their creative visions to life by handling “more laborious, less creative and more costly aspects” of filmmaking.
Despite this, Affleck remained firm in his belief that AI cannot create something truly original. “That’s how large video models, large language models, basically work. They’re just cross-pollinating things that exist. Nothing new is created,” he said, according to Variety.
Over his extensive career, Affleck has appeared in numerous acclaimed films. Some of his most iconic roles include Good Will Hunting, Gone Girl and Dazed and Confused. Most recently, he reprised his role as Batman in The Flash alongside Ezra Miller.
