After a successful opening to “Barbenheimer”, both Barbie and Oppenheimer reached theatrical milestones within only five days. Greta Gerwig’s Barbie surpassed $200 million, and Christopher Nolan’s three-hour film exceeded $100 million.
Barbie is a PG-13 fantasy comedy starring Margot Robbie as the stereotypical beloved Barbie doll and Ryan Gosling as Barbie’s accessory, Ken. Oppenheimer is a biopic starring Cillian Murphy as the physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer who led the creation of the atomic bomb.
On Tuesday, Barbie added $26 million, bringing the North American total to $214.1 million. Barbie surpasses John Wick: Chapter 4 at the domestic box office, which hit $187 million. It soon looks like Barbie will top Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which hit $214.5 million.
Overseas, the fantasy comedy raked in $200 million, putting Barbie at a total of $400 million globally. The Warner Bros. film cost $145 million (before marketing campaigns).
Oppenheimer has hit a milestone for historical dramas. It is one of 19 films to hit $100 million. On Tuesday, the film tacked on $12 million, bringing the North American total to $107 million. Internationally, Oppenheimer made $130.8 million, and globally the total comes out to $238 million. The film cost $100 million to make.
Overall “Barbenheimer” is doing significantly well with Warner Bros. and Universal backing the movies and putting a significant budget on the movies.
