The Barbenheimer duel is moving into its third weekend, and new contenders are now throwing themselves into the ring: 4 teenage turtles and a big shark. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and Meg 2: The Trench are amid their opening weekends.
With the track it’s on, Barbie is positioned to earn $54 million this weekend, pushing it to $460.4 million domestically, and over a billion worldwide. As well as this being an amazing third weekend for a film, this will make Barbie the first billion-dollar movie solo directed by a woman. Barbie has become the most successful film directed by a woman, solo or otherwise, dethroning Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel.
While Barbie is set to top the box office this weekend, second place is anyone’s game. It’s a 3-way competition between Oppenheimer, Mutant Mayhem, and Meg 2. All of them are currently estimated to gross $29 million revealed by Hollywood Reporter.
Paramount is gunning for the Half-Shell Heroes to take number 2, with their estimates coming out to $30 million for the weekend. Unlike Meg 2, Mutant Mayhem opened on Wednesday to get a jump on the competition, putting it on track to a five-day total of $45 million.
Meg 2 chomped into a 12 million dollar opening, off of $3.2 million in its Thursday preshows. Compared to its predecessor, The Meg opened to $45 million but to a less-crowded marketplace.
The second half of the Barbenheimer craze is Christopher Nolan’s historical drama Oppenheimer is also decimating the box office. The film is currently on track to end the weekend with a $551 million total worldwide, the best gross for a World War II film, overtaking Dunkirk and Saving Private Ryan, not adjusted for inflation. As well as this, Oppenheimer is also the fifth-best outing for the auteur’s career.
