Zach Cregger’s newest movie, Weapons, has a new marketing campaign plan. Similarly to the website marketing surrounding The Blair Witch Project in the 90s, there are faux missing person cases who are supposed to be the main characters in Weapons. The website has been dubbed as “Maybrook News,” and it lays out the plot of the film as follows,
“A chilling mystery has gripped the small town of Maybrook after 17 children voluntarily left their homes Wednesday morning. Authorities are baffled by the inexplicable disappearance, which has shaken the community to its core.”
This is accompanied by clips of the children being taken with the time at 2:17 am with silhouettes of all the kids. If a viewer scrolls down through all of this, they will find a link labeled, “Underground prison discovered in rental home,” which leads to a different site with an article summarizing the film Barbarian. This has been credited as the solidification of the two movies being part of a shared universe.
So far at CinemaCon, Cregger disclosed their first rough draft trailer for Weapons. In this trailer, audiences got to see a set cast of stars such as Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Benedict Wong, and Austin Abrams.
Currently, Weapons is set to be released theatrically on August 8th, 2025, but this is subject to change. But the faux site linking both Weapons and Barbarian is available to view here.
