‘Backrooms’ Set To Make Waves for Both A24 And The Horror Genre

Over the past decade or so, A24 has quietly built a real reputation in the horror space as a distributor.  From the unnerving performance by Toni Collette in Hereditary, to the disturbing atmosphere in The Lighthouse, and the darkness of Midsommar, A24 has shown that they are unafraid to distribute the unique vision of directors.  That is unlikely to change with Backrooms, with the film set to be the debut outing for 20-year-old director Kane Parsons.

A24 is set up nicely to make a major splash after their previous horror film, Undertone, sported a relatively quiet theatrical run.  Backrooms is set to star Renate Reinsve and Chiwetel Ejiofor, with the latter fresh off the awards circuit for her performance in Sentimental Value.  She also stars in Fjord, the film that just won the Palme d’Or after debuting at the 79th annual Cannes Film Festival.  Collider provided a brief summary of the upcoming film’s plot,

The film follows the sudden appearance of an unlikely doorway in a furniture showroom, and the hellish, strange world that is unlocked for a therapist looking for her lost patient.

With projections for the first weekend box office set to greatly exceed $50 million, Kane Parsons is set to become the youngest director to ever debut at #1 at the box office.  The film will also blow past A24’s previous biggest box office debut of $25.5 million, set by Civil War.

Backrooms currently holds a certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes at 90%, with the film set to go wide this weekend.
