‘Back In Action’ Brings Cameron Diaz Out Of Acting Hiatus

Cameron Diaz is returning to the screen with Jamie Foxx to star in the upcoming Netflix comedy Back in Action. After over a decade-long acting hiatus, Diaz makes a thrilling come back in this film about suburban parents forced to confront their past as secret agents.

“Years after giving up life as CIA spies to start a family, Emily (Diaz) and Matt (Foxx) find themselves dragged back into the world of espionage when their cover is blown,” the official trailer’s description states.

The trailer peeks at the gripping action that past operatives for the CIA face while trying to live a seemingly ordinary life with their two kids (Euphoria’s McKenna Roberts and Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Rylan Jackson). Directed by Horrible BossesSeth Gordon, this film also stars Kyle Chandler, Andrew Scott, and Jamie Demetriou.

Back in Action marks Diaz’s first role since playing Miss Hannigan in Annie (2014), coincidentally also co-starring with Foxx. According to Deadline, the prolonged acting break that Diaz took was needed to prioritize her personal life. “It felt like something I had to do to reclaim my own life. And I just really didn’t care about anything else. I didn’t. Nobody’s opinion, nobody’s success, no one’s offer, no one’s anything could change my mind about my decision of taking care of myself and building the life that I really wanted to have,” Diaz said at Fortune‘s Most Powerful Women Summit in October. “I think it really comes to: What are you passionate about? For me, it was to build my family.”

Back in Action is quite literally putting Diaz back in action with acting, as she is next set to star in Jonah Hill’s upcoming comedy Outcome, while also reprising her role as Princess Fiona in the 2026 Shrek film.

Back in Action will be released on January 17 on Netflix.
