Avengers Endgame carries its historic run into its second weekend. Endgame garnered the $145 million via domestic theaters in the second weekend since its release. This is the second most profitable second weekend in the domestic market, behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($149 million). Endgame is now the second biggest film of all time. The superhero film has also set the record for the fastest film to pass $2 billion at the global box office. The previous record was set in 2009 by by James Cameron’s Avatar. Avatar achieved $2 billion in a 47 day run; Endgame hit $2 billion in just 11 days.
In addition to smashing records, Endgame has silenced many of the concerns of spetics asking questioning the sustainability of continuing theatrical releases in a changing digital landscape. The outstanding success of Disney/Marvel’s juggernaut hit proves that audiences are still willing to pay for a premium cinematic experience.
Repeat viewings by fans have pushed Endgame over the $2 billion landmark. Marvel’s three hour epic currently sits as the number one movie in all of the countries it release other than Japan. Endgame has sparked a new energy in 2019 cinema in what was otherwise a slumping year. It remains to be seen whether high tide raises all boats, or if Endgame has grown so large it will eclipse the other releases this year. Disney still has and arsonal of preperteries including Aladdin, Toy Story 4, The Lion King, Frozen 2, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker set for 2019 releases.
