The sequel to James Cameron’s Avatar, the highest-grossing film of all time, is finally coming this winter. 20th Century Studios released The Way of Water’s official teaser trailer today. After being re-released in China last year, Avatar eclipsed Avengers: Endgame as the most lucrative film of all time. Its revenue passed $2.8 billion globally, according to ticket sales.
Avatar: The Way of Water features many of the first film’s original cast members, including Zoe Saldana as Neytiri, Sigourney Weaver in a new role, and Sam Worthington as Jake Sully. Newcomers to the franchise include Kate Winslet as Ronal, Michelle Yeoh as Dr. Karina Mogue, and Oona Chaplin as Varang. The sequel continues Sully and Neytiri’s story on the planet of Pandora, fighting new threats to its civilization while growing their family.
The Way of Water is scheduled for release in theaters on December 16. Cameron revealed that he aimed for a 2014 release, which was pushed back seven times until its current date this year. The film wrapped filming in 2020 alongside Avatar 3, which is set for a 2024 release. Cameron had combined the filming process for the first two sequels, plus some content for the fourth installment.
