Avatar: Fire And Ash opened tonight with a solid $37 million, including $12 million from previews, and could be on its way to a gargantuan possible $86 to $90 million weekend haul after opening night. While some hopefuls are projecting a possible $90 million and more, Deadline reported $84 to $88 million as the current projection, so only time will tell.
In 2022, Avatar: The Way of Water opened to $53 million and went on to $134 million for its opening weekend before ending its box office reign with $2.34 billion after dominating the winter 2022 to 2023 season. The first Avatar film launched to $77 million in 2009 and ended its reign with $2.9 billion. Considering the continued budget of $350 million plus for each film, Avatar: Fire And Ash has to stick the landing and go the mile for a billion-dollar finish if it wants to keep the franchise alive.
If Avatar: Fire And Ash underperforms, it is likely that it will be a while, if ever, if Avatar 4 hits theaters despite having completed primary filming. As such, director and franchise helm James Cameron has placed Fire and Ash as a conclusion for the series if the stars don’t align again.
