Following their success with Selma, Ava DuVernay and David Oyelowo will be joining forces yet again for a romantic drama/murder mystery set during the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Teaming up with Participant Media, DuVernay will reportedly write, produce, and direct the untitled project, while Oyelowo is in negotiations to produce and star in the film.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, DuVernay states that the film “will explore the complexities of intimate relationships within times of chaos, while also examining the chaos itself.” The film will mark the third collaboration between DuVernay and Oyelowo. Before his acclaimed performance as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Selma, which was nominated for a Best Picture Oscar, Oyelowo also starred in DuVernay’s 2012 debut feature Middle of Nowhere.
Hurricane Katrina has been the inspiration for a number of films and TV shows in recent years, including Benh Zeitlin’s fantasy drama Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012), Spike Lee’s documentary If God Is Willing and Da Creek Don’t Rise (2010), and the HBO series Treme (2010-2013). DuVernay and Oyelowo’s project looks to be an intriguing addition to that list.
