Australian Musicians Nick Cave And Warren Ellis Score ‘Back To Black’

Australian musicians Nick Cave and Warren Ellis have collaborated to compose the score for the upcoming Amy Winehouse biopic Back to Black. In addition to Winehouse’s songs, Cave and Ellis wrote about thirty minutes of the music.

According to Variety, who released an exclusive image of the musicians, director Sam Taylor-Johnson intended to hire Cave and Ellis due to their past works and unique styles. After listening to their scores from films like Blonde, Taylor-Johnson wanted to work with the duo on her project. She praises their work, saying, “Their sensibility as well as understanding of this story has led to a profoundly deep and moving film score.”

Cave and Ellis have been long-time collaborators since 1993 when the latter played the violin for Nick Cave and the Bad Seed’s album “Let Love In.” Eventually, Ellis joined Cave’s band, and they soon worked together on ten more albums and more film scores like The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and Hell or High Water. Back to Black marks Cave’s first collaboration with his friend Taylor-Johnson.

Back to Black follows Winehouse’s career from its beginning to her tragic death from alcohol poisoning. StudioCanal will release the film in the UK on April 12th, while Focus Features will release it on May 17th.
