Art Directors Guild And AARP Movies For Grownups Awards Announce 2024 Nominees

The Art Directors Guild Awards and AARP’s Movies for Grownups Awards have unveiled their nominee lists. While there are some expected contenders, there are also some surprise snubs.

The Art Directors Guild honors the work of production design artists across various cinematic mediums in five categories: Fantasy, Period, and Contemporary Features. In almost 18 years of its 27-year run, one winner from one of these groups has won the Art Direction/Production Oscar category. Their previous run of nine Oscar wins lasted until All Quiet on the Western Front won the Oscar despite the ADG’s votes to the contrary.

Meanwhile, the Movies for Grownups Awards focuses on film industry members over fifty years old and their work for mature audiences. According to AARP film and TV critic Tim Appelo, Movies for Grownups is meant to “ignite cultural change in Hollywood” and combat “industry ageism.” For this year, AARP nominated features like Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon, and Barbie. While actors like Viola Davis and Nichoas Cage gained recognition this year-round, Lily Gladstone was neglected from this year’s run.

AARP will announce its winners in the upcoming February/March issue of AARP The Magazine. Meanwhile, the ADG will have its ceremony on February 10th at Ovation Hollywood’s Ray Dolby Ballroom. At this ceremony, the late production designer Lawrence G. Paull, known for his work in Blade Runner and Back to the Future, will be inducted into the ADG Hall of Fame.
