This week actor Armie Hammer has made the decision to step down from an upcoming role amidst social media scandal. The role was for upcoming romance film Shotgun Wedding, alongside Jennifer Lopez, which follows a couple whose destination wedding gets thrown off course when the wedding party is taken hostage. The film was scheduled to be shooting this month in the Dominican Republic, but will now be recast and likely delayed.
The uproar online began on Twitter when an alleged, unverified direct message exchange between Hammer and a woman were posted online, describing purported violent sexual fantasies including cannibalism and blood drinking. Hammer or his publicist have not made any response on social media nor commented on the authenticity of the posts.
He did, though, make a statement to Variety with the news of the recast that said, “I’m not responding to these bullshit claims but in light of the vicious and spurious online attacks against me, I cannot in good conscience now leave my children for 4 months to shoot a film in the Dominican Republic. Lionsgate is supporting me in this and I’m grateful to them for that.”
Hammer is still attached to upcoming series The Offer for Paramount TV. He recently appeared in Rebecca on Netflix and can be seen this year in star-studded Death on the Nile.
